7 Tips for Your Honeymoon in Maui

We are freshly back from our honeymoon in Maui. We had such a wonderful time can’t wait to go back again. While there, I felt inspired to share my top 7 tips for those planning their honeymoon in Maui. We went from Sunday to Friday, which felt like the perfect amount of time. Regardless of how long you go for, you are going to have an amazing time! I hope you enjoy these tips. And if you have any tips of your own, feel free to share them with me. Aloha!

Tip 1 - Fly in as early as you can

An instant “win” for your trip to Hawaii is that you have time on your side for your way there (coming home… not so much). The earlier you fly in will mean the earlier you can enjoy the beauty of the island. Even if your room at your hotel is not ready by the time you get there, many places will hold your luggage at bag check. Change into your swimwear in one of the lobby restrooms and head to the beach or pool while you wait for your room.

Tip 2 - Splurge on first-class tickets (even if it’s just for the trip there)

Hopefully your friends and family contributed to your Honeyfund to help you out with your dream honeymoon. Start it all off by flying first-class. You won’t regret it! We flew Hawaiian Airlines and upon sitting down in our seats (1A and 1B), we were offered a pre-flight beverage. We opted for the mimosas with POG (passion fruit, orange, and guava) juice. Once in the air, we were given a complimentary hot breakfast and all the mai tai’s we wanted! Besides the food and drinks, we loved all the extra leg room we had, the fact that it was just us two sitting together, the free pillows and blankets, and the fact they gave us an iPad with headphones to watch movies on while we were in the air. This was a wonderful way to start our trip and we felt so fancy getting to sit first-class.

Tip 3 - Make your first stop Costco near the airport

Costco is so close the airport! We were so happy we did our research ahead of time to learn this because we were able to stock up on wine, muffins, snacks, and water for the hotel. We all know how much alcohol is up-charged in restaurants, so getting just the bottles of wine and champagne made the stop to Costco worth it alone.

Tip 4 - The best mai tai’s are at Monkeypod Kitchen

We had several mai tai’s throughout our trip, but there was only one place we went to again. And that was Monkeypod Kitchen. The honey and pineapple foam is what totally makes it. I would go to Hawaii again, just for one of their mai tai’s!

Tip 5 - Rent chairs and an umbrella from one of the resorts

We went back and forth on this one. We thought if we didn’t rent chairs and umbrellas, it would be a quick way to save some money. But we reminded ourselves that we had been gifted money for activities during our trip and just because we aren’t the surfing, off-roading, mountain climbing types, this didn’t mean we couldn’t count this as an activity. After a member of the resort staff set up our umbrella and chairs we knew it was worth every penny. We had it made in the shade (literally) steps away from the ocean. And the best part was when we were all finished, we returned our ticket to the staff and they went back to collect the umbrella and chairs. We didn’t have to lift a finger!

Tip 6 - Grab lunch at any of the food truck spots on the island

There are several food trucks around the island. You will often see them a bunch of them set up in groups like a food court. These spots always had the best food! From BBQ, seafood, shaved ice, coffee, and much more, these trucks will provide great food at amazing prices. There are usually picnic tables and chairs set up for people to eat in front of the trucks. There was one of these setups across the street from Costco which made it really easy to stop at for some lunch before we made our drive to the other side of the island where our hotel was. Our favorite part was seeing all the free range chickens roaming around!

Tip 7 - Find a local wedding photographer and do a mini session

Many photographers offer mini-sessions for people wanting a few photos to capture their honeymoon, proposals, family portrait’s, etc. I recommend going on Instagram and searching #hawaiiweddingphotographer or better yet, narrow down the specific location you will be stay at. For us, I searched #mauiweddingphotographer. These sessions usually last 30-45 minutes and you get anywhere from 15-25 edited images, depending on the photographer. We did this and are so glad we did, because now we have these beautiful images from our honeymoon to add to our wedding album.

This is us our amazing photographer Marie of Marylane Sudios. Check out her work… we LOVED working with her!
